Understanding the Root Cause of Academic Stress
By Sunidhi Dunakhe, Psychologist at WeLearn India
Academic stress is often not just about exams. In many cases, it arises due to:
- Fear of disappointing parents
- Lack of clarity about future goals
- Unrealistic expectations
- Comparison with friends and relatives
- Pressure to choose conventional careers
- Poor self-confidence
- Uncertainty about personal strengths and abilities
When students are unsure about their future or feel forced into unsuitable academic paths, stress naturally increases. Continuous pressure without proper guidance can lead to anxiety, emotional exhaustion, low self-esteem, and even avoidance of studies.
Career counselling helps address these root causes instead of only focusing on academic performance.
